What Are The 5 Best Places to Live In or Around Canterbury?

Situated in the southeast of England, some 60 miles from London, Canterbury is a cathedral city that is rich in history. It is a very popular location for tourists to visit, often considered one of the most-visited cities across the entire nation.

With many iconic landmarks, such as Canterbury Cathedral and St. Augustine’s Abbey, as well as the University of Kent just north of Canterbury, it can be a great place to move to for opportunity and perhaps even raise a family there, if that is on the cards for you in the future.

If you are seriously considering moving to or near Canterbury, you will no doubt be wondering what areas are best, where would be the most ideal places to live. As such, we’ve taken it upon ourselves to find out.

1. Old Dover Road and New Dover Road

Of course if you’re wanting the luxurious city life in Canterbury itself, Old Dover Road or New Dover Road, situated fairly close to each other, could be the areas for you. As you could probably imagine, however, living within Canterbury itself is likely to come with a premium, especially in areas like these.

Though Old Dover Road may be a little cheaper than it’s nearby counterpart, house prices in these areas can be a little higher than some of the surrounding areas. What you’re paying for though, is quality, as there are some beautiful homes in this area.

You also have a nearby cricket club, rugby club, a selection of schools and hospitals, making it perfect for families. You’re also directly connected to both Canterbury city centre and the village Bridge, which itself is on the direct route to Dover, only half an hour away!

2. Wye

Located only a few miles down the road from Canterbury and Ashford, Wye is a smaller but highly sought after village that is ideal for people who prefer a much quieter country life. Back in 2013, Sunday Times readers actually voted Wye as the third best place to live, in the entire United Kingdom!

There is a lot of history and culture within Wye, despite being a much smaller location with a smaller population. You’ll find a local farmers market, village hall, library and church within the area, as well as a selection of schools and local sports clubs, such as cricket, tennis and football.

Being out in the countryside, you’ll of course be needing plenty of handy transport links for family days out, work commutes and more. Whilst not as frequent as other areas, you’ll find regular trains linked to places like Ashford, Canterbury and London.

If you’re wondering why Wye? The answer is simple. Wye not!

3. Wickhambreaux

Another popular choice is the small rural village of Wickhambreaux, sitting only a few short miles away from Canterbury and surrounded by prominent farm land that contributes to the regions fruit, cereal and crops.

Though it is one of the smaller options in this list, with a smaller population, Wickhambreaux is rich in history and culture, making it a quiet and popular location for commuting to other cities and villages, with a strong community as well.

Whilst there may not as much to do here as other locations, you’ll find there are always church activities going on and there is both a competitive cricket club and a local Produce Association. You won’t find many shops in Wickhambreaux itself, but at only a quick trip from Canterbury, that’s hardly an issue!

For budding families, you’ll find a primary school here too, still within its original historical building, whilst for the adults of the village you’ll find a nice local pub to enjoy a quiet village pint!

4. Faversham

Faversham is a great market town in the Kent region, sat fairly close to Canterbury and well-connected to London with plenty of road and rail links. If you’re a fan of history, Faversham has it all, with links to the Roman Conquest, Middle Ages, Industrial Revolution and more.

Transport and history is not all though, as Faversham often offers favourable temperatures due to its close proximity to the coast. Additionally, you’ll find Faversham is full of culture, with local theatre performances and cinemas, civic societies and a national fruit collection every year.

You may also be pleased to know there are also a choice of grammar schools and an academy, as well as a local football team of Faversham Town F.C., though arguably the pièce de résistance, at least according to one user online, is a local Wetherspoons that seems to offer a fantastic breakfast!

5. Wingham

Last but certainly not least, there’s the village of Wingham. Overall villages seem to be popular choices for residents in the Kent region, with their quiet locations and yet accessible transport links to places near and far.

With a history that dates back to the stone age, a wildlife park and plenty of local gastropubs, Wingham has become quite popular, especially due to its abundance of grade listed buildings and a nice 27 mile long countryside footpath.

Whilst smaller in size and population, it’s easy access to villages, towns and cities around it, Wingham is like a cultural and historical time capsule, with beautiful homes for you to choose from.
